The Eight Stages of Civilizational Collapse

I’ve been watching things fall apart for a while now. Not in a dramatic way, not with explosions or sudden catastrophes, but in that slow, grinding manner that characterizes how societies actually end. You read about the Maya abandoning their cities, or Rome’s legions becoming unable to defend the borders they’d once patrolled with ease, and you imagine some singular moment of realization. But that’s not how it happens. It happens in increments so small that people living through them can always tell themselves it’s temporary, it’s cyclical, it’s going to turn around.

Still, after enough years of reading the data—wealth concentration figures, climate reports, debt statistics, biodiversity indices—you start to see a shape emerging. Not prophecy, just pattern recognition. Civilizations that collapsed in the past didn’t do so randomly. They moved through recognizable stages, and those stages tend to share common features regardless of whether you’re looking at Bronze Age Mesopotamia or twentieth-century industrial powers.

What follows is my attempt to map those stages as I see them operating now. I’m not claiming expertise I don’t have. I’m just someone who’s spent too many evenings comparing archaeological studies with contemporary news reports and finding the parallels impossible to ignore. Eight stages seem to capture the trajectory that historical societies followed on their way to transformation—transformation being the polite word for collapse, though collapse itself is just another kind of transformation, one that tends to be harder on the people living through it.

Below, I’ll walk through each stage. By the end, you’ll have a sense of where I think we are in this process—and more importantly, what the road ahead tends to look like for societies that have traveled it before.

Stage One: Fortune Pools at the Top

Wealth concentration isn’t merely unfair. That’s the wrong frame entirely. Plenty of unfair societies have persisted for centuries. The problem is that extreme concentration eventually makes societies ungovernable, and then unworkable, and then unsustainable. There’s a threshold past which the feedback mechanisms that allow societies to correct themselves—elections, market competition, social mobility—get captured by the people who benefit from things staying exactly as they are.

Consider where we stand. By 2025, the richest 1% of humanity were capturing over 20% of all income generated globally. Not wealth, which is bad enough—active income, the new value being created year by year. An average of four new billionaires were minted every week throughout 2024. Their collective fortunes grew by $2 trillion in that single year, which works out to roughly $5.7 billion per day. Meanwhile, 44% of the human species—three and a half billion people—survived on less than $6.85 daily. Fewer than 60,000 individuals controlled more wealth than the entire bottom half of humanity combined.

These aren’t abstract numbers. They represent a fundamental breakdown in the circulation that keeps complex economies functioning. Money, like blood, needs to move. When it pools in too few places, the extremities go numb. You can see this in the hollowing out of middle-class professions, the conversion of housing into speculative assets, the transformation of education from public good to inherited privilege. Each of these trends reinforces the others, creating a self-sustaining cycle where wealth begets political power, which begets policy that protects wealth.

Historical parallels help clarify where this leads. In the decades before the French Revolution, the top 10% of French society controlled roughly 90% of national wealth. The nobility were exempt from taxation even as the peasantry starved. When reform finally became unavoidable, it was too late for gradual adjustment; the accumulated grievance demanded rupture instead. Rome’s Crisis of the Third Century featured similar dynamics, as senatorial elites consolidated land into vast latifundia worked by slaves, displacing the free farmers who had supplied both the army and the tax base. When the empire needed capable administrators and loyal soldiers, it found neither.

What distinguishes our moment is the velocity and sophistication of extraction. Digital platforms have created mechanisms for wealth accumulation that make the rentiers of previous eras look almost benign by comparison. Network effects and data monopolies allow value to be captured at unprecedented scale with unprecedented efficiency. Meanwhile, the infrastructure that once enabled social mobility—public universities, unions, progressive taxation—has been systematically dismantled over the past forty years.

By 2035, we’ll be looking at a hereditary aristocracy more entrenched than anything seen since the feudal era. Educational opportunity will circulate almost entirely within wealthy families. Geographic segregation—the rich in fortified enclaves, everyone else in crumbling peripheries—will make shared civic life impossible. Political power will move through networks of family and finance, producing leaders who have never experienced the systems ordinary people navigate daily and therefore cannot imagine fixing them.

The brittleness created by this concentration tends to manifest suddenly. Complex societies need some degree of mobility to maintain institutional competence. When authority becomes inherited rather than earned, the quality of governance degrades in ways that aren’t immediately visible but prove catastrophic when tested. The feedback loops that would normally correct errors get captured by those who benefit from the status quo. Society becomes, in effect, a monoculture—vulnerable to perturbations that more diverse and adaptive systems could weather.

We’re already past the point where democratic mechanisms can reverse this concentration through normal political processes. The wealthy control courts, media, political parties, and regulatory agencies not through conspiracy but through the natural accumulation of advantage over time. What remains is the theater of democracy, the performance of representation while actual decisions get made elsewhere by people who have never known financial precarity. This is how the first stage feels: not absence of wealth, but its absolute concentration, creating a society that cannot learn because it cannot afford to question the premises of those who control its resources.

The video is simply shocking… Because what you’re about to see is something no one was prepared for. This coming war won’t be fought with tanks and infantry like the first two…

Stage Two: The Living World Withdraws

Every civilization rests on ecological foundations. This sounds obvious when stated directly, but we manage to forget it constantly—building elaborate superstructures of finance and governance while the soil beneath them erodes, while the rains that fed agriculture for millennia shift their patterns, while the pollinators that make food production possible die off invisibly. When those foundations shift, the superstructure cannot long endure. It might persist for a while through momentum, through institutional habit, through collective denial. But the accounting eventually comes due.

We’re in the middle of that accounting now. By 2025, the world had breached the 1.5-degree Celsius warming threshold for the first time across a three-year period. The Global Tipping Points Report, compiled by over 160 scientists and released in late 2025, confirmed that tropical coral reefs have passed irreversible tipping points. Within decades, all that will remain are isolated patches. The Amazon rainforest—responsible for a fifth of global oxygen production and a critical carbon sink—approaches savannification, the transformation from forest to grassland that will release centuries of stored carbon and disrupt rainfall across South America.

These aren’t future projections. They’re present conditions.

The insect decline illustrates how quietly ecological rupture unfolds. Insects make up 90% of all animal species. They form the foundation of terrestrial food webs. Yet over 40% of insect species are in decline, with extinction occurring eight times faster than among mammals, birds, or reptiles. In Central Europe, monitoring has documented a 75% drop in flying insect biomass over recent decades. This isn’t an aesthetic concern about fewer butterflies. Without insect pollinators, roughly 75% of global crop species face production collapse. Without decomposers, nutrient cycling fails. Without insects as food sources, bird and amphibian populations crash. The United Nations Environment Programme noted in 2024 that this domino effect threatens entire ecosystems with cascading failures.

Agricultural systems are already feeling consequences. Stanford research published in 2025 identified critical rainfall thresholds beyond which maize and wheat crops fail. By 2030, without significant intervention, crop failure risks in global breadbaskets will increase up to 25 times current levels. By 2050, maize failures will occur every two years without irrigation, compared to every five years with irrigation. Wheat failures will likely become annual events. These projections assume current climate trajectories; they don’t account for tipping points that could accelerate warming beyond modeled scenarios.

Archaeology offers instruction here. The Maya civilization’s Terminal Classic period (800-900 CE) coincided with droughts that reduced precipitation by 40% in some regions. The Maya had sophisticated water management, but systems designed for one climate regime cannot adapt when that regime shifts. Cities were abandoned within decades. The southern lowland population declined by 90%. Not through war or conquest—through the simple inability of agricultural systems to feed people.

Our rupture is similar in mechanism but planetary in scale. The Holocene climate stability that enabled agriculture, cities, and complex societies is ending. The Anthropocene brings not just warming but destabilization—of jet streams, ocean currents, monsoon patterns, ice sheets. Each system that fails removes a buffer against further destabilization. Arctic ice loss reduces albedo, accelerating warming. Permafrost thaw releases methane, eighty times more potent than carbon dioxide over twenty-year timescales. Weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation threatens to plunge Europe into conditions resembling the Little Ice Age while the tropics experience unprecedented heat.

By 2040, this rupture will have altered human geography fundamentally. Regions currently supporting hundreds of millions—the Sahel, the Indian subcontinent, the American Southwest, the Mediterranean basin—will experience conditions making outdoor labor impossible for weeks or months annually. Agricultural yields in these regions will drop 30-50%. Earth’s carrying capacity, already exceeded by industrial civilization, will contract rapidly. The question becomes not how to manage abundance but how to allocate scarcity without triggering the institutional fractures that characterize later stages.

Ecological rupture doesn’t negotiate. It doesn’t respond to political will or rhetorical skill. It’s the accumulated consequence of centuries of extraction, the bill coming due for the energy subsidy fossil fuels provided. And because ecological systems exhibit threshold effects—tipping points beyond which change becomes self-reinforcing—the rupture will accelerate even as emissions decline. We’re not merely facing climate change. We’re facing the end of conditions that made complex civilization possible, a return to the volatility that characterized earlier geological epochs when human populations were small and mobile.

Stage Three: Running Out of the Good Stuff

Complexity is expensive. Every layer of social organization—every regulatory body, technological system, educational institution, logistical network—requires energy to maintain. When energy is abundant and cheap, societies can afford complexity. They build skyscrapers and space programs, maintain standing armies and welfare states, support artistic traditions and scientific research. When energy becomes scarce or expensive, complexity must be shed. Archaeologists call this simplification. It’s the defining characteristic of civilizational decline.

The metric that matters is EROI—energy return on investment. It measures how much energy you get back for each unit you expend to extract, process, and distribute it. When EROI is high—when a society gains 100 units of energy for every 1 invested—it can support elaborate social structures. When EROI falls, the surplus available for non-energy activities shrinks. Complex systems become unaffordable. Maintenance gets deferred. Institutions decay.

Oil’s EROI has been declining for decades. The easily accessible crude that powered the twentieth century—the gushers of Texas and the Middle East—has been depleted. What remains requires more energy to extract: deepwater drilling, tar sands, fracking. Global oil production’s EROI has fallen from approximately 100:1 in the 1930s to perhaps 20:1 today. Coal and natural gas follow similar trajectories. The renewable transition, necessary as it is, presents its own EROI challenges. Solar and wind require fossil fuel inputs for manufacture and deployment. They provide intermittent power needing storage or backup, reducing effective EROI. Biofuels show lower ratios than oil-derived gasoline.

Research from 2025 projects that global energy production’s EROI will peak between 2025 and 2045 at approximately 95:1, then enter permanent decline. This isn’t a technological problem solvable by innovation. It’s thermodynamic reality imposed by depletion of high-quality energy stocks. When transitions push aggregated EROI below 10:1, civilizations face constriction. Empirical analyses link declining EROI to reduced net energy available for agriculture, manufacturing, and infrastructure maintenance. Rome experienced this as conquests ceased and currency-supplying mines exhausted. The energy subsidy enabling imperial complexity disappeared, and complexity contracted.

Modern global economy is far more energy-intensive than Rome. A single smartphone requires more energy to manufacture than a medieval peasant consumed in a lifetime. Global supply chains—container ships crossing oceans, trucks traversing continents, refrigeration maintaining food from farm to table—embody enormous energy subsidies. When those subsidies decline, chains break. Localization becomes not a lifestyle choice but economic necessity.

By 2035, the energy descent will render much contemporary infrastructure economically unviable. Suburban sprawl, dependent on automobile transport and climate control, will become unsustainable. Air travel will contract to mid-twentieth-century levels. Industrial agriculture, consuming 10 fossil fuel calories for every food calorie produced, will face cost pressures driving consolidation and collapse. The “green” transition will stall not from political opposition but energetic constraints—the materials for batteries, solar panels, and wind turbines are themselves energy-intensive to extract and process.

The energy descent creates a paradox accelerating collapse. Societies need energy to transition to new energy systems. Infrastructure for renewable energy—lithium mines, solar factories, distribution grids—requires fossil fuel inputs that become increasingly scarce and expensive. Attempting to maintain current complexity while transitioning energy systems creates resource competition that both undertaxes the transition and accelerates depletion of existing stocks. The result is stair-step descent: each energy crisis forces simplification, which reduces capacity to address the next crisis.

Historical civilizations faced similar descents. Easter Island depleted forests, losing capacity to transport the moai statues defining cultural complexity. Chaco Canyon’s Ancestral Puebloans overextended agricultural systems in arid environments, eventually abandoning elaborate settlements for simpler dispersed communities. In each case, descent wasn’t chosen but forced by energetic and ecological constraints. Complexity collapsed because it couldn’t be sustained.

Our civilization faces the same constraints, but with higher stakes. The complexity we’ve built—nuclear plants needing constant cooling, chemical plants storing toxic intermediates, megacities dependent on just-in-time food delivery—cannot be safely simplified. Abandonment isn’t an option for spent fuel pools or chemical facilities. Yet maintenance becomes increasingly difficult as energy costs rise and skilled labor grows scarce. The energy descent will force simplification upon systems that cannot be safely simplified, creating catastrophic failures characterizing terminal collapse stages.

Stage Four: Things Stop Working

Institutions are civilization’s skeleton. They coordinate activity, resolve disputes, allocate resources, maintain shared fictions—money, law, citizenship—that enable large groups of strangers to cooperate. When institutions function, they’re invisible, like bones supporting a body without conscious attention. When they fracture, the body collapses. This stage is institutional fracture: the point at which governance mechanisms lose coherence, legitimacy, and effectiveness.

Data from 2024 and 2025 tells a clear story. The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Democracy Index registered a decline in its global score from 5.23 in 2023 to 5.17 in 2024, continuing democratic backsliding persisting for nearly two decades. Sixty countries are now classified as authoritarian regimes, an increase of eight from a decade ago. The United States, long considered democratic stability’s bulwark, experienced a decline in its Liberal Democracy Index from 0.85 to 0.73 during recent years, returning to levels unseen since 1976. The Century Foundation’s Democracy Meter reported in 2025 that “a democratic collapse has already occurred” in America, with overall scores dropping nearly 28% in a single year.

But institutional fracture extends beyond democracy to basic governance capacity. The United States Congress hasn’t passed a budget on time in over two decades, relying on continuing resolutions preventing long-term planning. Regulatory agencies have been captured by industries they supposedly oversee, producing rules protecting incumbents rather than the public. The civil service faces politicization and purge. Similar patterns manifest across the developed world: the European Union’s inability to address member state debt crises, the United Kingdom’s revolving door of prime ministers, coalition government paralysis from Israel to Germany.

Historical parallels abound. Rome’s Crisis of the Third Century (235-284 CE) saw 26 emperors in 50 years, most meeting violent ends. The administrative apparatus governing an empire from Britain to Mesopotamia fragmented as provincial armies proclaimed their own emperors. Tax collection collapsed, currency debasement accelerated, and the empire came within a hair’s breadth of dissolution. The Maya experienced similar fragmentation, with city-states that once cooperated in trade and ritual warfare descending into destructive conflict as agricultural conditions deteriorated. Divine kingship’s authority evaporated when gods failed to deliver rain.

Our institutional fracture differs in information speed and system complexity. Roman emperors took weeks to learn of distant provincial revolts. Today, crises unfold in real time across global networks no single institution can comprehend, let alone control. Financial markets move trillions in milliseconds. Supply chains span continents involving thousands of independent actors. Climate systems shift beyond national boundaries. The institutions we have—nation-states designed for industrial warfare and colonial expansion—are structurally incapable of addressing transnational challenges.

Fracture manifests as legitimacy loss. Citizens observe institutions failing to deliver basic functions—security, prosperity, justice—and conclude institutions themselves are illegitimate. This isn’t mere cynicism; it’s rational assessment. When the wealthy evade taxes the middle class must pay, when corporations violate laws without consequence, when political promises are transparently false, the social contract dissolves. People withdraw from institutional participation. They stop voting, stop paying taxes, stop cooperating with authorities. Institutions continue existing as hollow shells, performing governance rituals without substance.

By 2030, this legitimacy crisis will produce governance vacuums across much of the developed world. Local authorities will ignore national mandates. Corporations will function as parallel states, providing security and services governments cannot. Criminal organizations will expand territorial control, as the mafia did in Sicily when the state withdrew. The monopoly on legitimate violence defining the modern state will fragment, returning to competing authority patchworks characterizing medieval Europe.

Institutional fracture is accelerated by cognitive fragmentation—the next stage’s subject. When populations can’t agree on basic facts, when epistemic communities fragment into incompatible realities, the coordination institutions provide becomes impossible. Governance requires shared understanding. When that understanding dissolves, institutions can only enforce, and enforcement without legitimacy is merely domination, breeding resistance, accelerating fracture.

The Roman Empire survived the Crisis of the Third Century through Diocletian’s brutal reforms—price controls, currency stabilization, administrative reorganization, empire division into eastern and western halves. But those reforms emerged from a political culture still valuing the empire as an institution worth preserving. They required leaders capable of long-term thinking and sacrifice. Our institutional fracture occurs in an era of short-term incentives, where political leaders are selected for media attention generation rather than governing effectiveness, where corporate executives are rewarded for quarterly results regardless of long-term consequences. Reform conditions don’t exist. The fracture will widen until institutions shatter entirely.

Stage Five: Nobody Can Agree on Anything Anymore

Civilization requires coordination, and coordination requires communication, and communication requires shared reference points—agreement about what exists, what matters, and what’s true. Cognitive fragmentation is the stage where these shared reference points dissolve, leaving populations unable to agree on basic facts, let alone coordinate responses to collective challenges. This isn’t merely disagreement about values or policies. It’s the breakdown of epistemic infrastructure making collective action possible.

The early twenty-first century’s information ecosystem has produced this fragmentation with unprecedented efficiency. Social media algorithms, optimized for engagement, amplify the most provocative content regardless of accuracy. The attention extraction business model rewards outrage over nuance, conspiracy over complexity. The result is knowledge’s balkanization: not merely different opinions, but different factual worlds. Significant portions of populations believe elections were stolen despite absent evidence and failed legal challenges. Similar epistemic fractures manifest across vaccines, climate change, historical events.

Fragmentation isn’t accidental. It serves interests benefiting from paralysis. When populations can’t agree on problem existence, they can’t address problems. The tobacco industry pioneered this strategy, manufacturing doubt about smoking’s health effects despite internal knowledge of dangers. The fossil fuel industry extended the playbook to climate change, funding think tanks and media personalities questioning scientific consensus. Today, fragmentation has become general, affecting every public life domain. Institutions that once mediated reality—universities, newspapers, scientific bodies—have lost authority, replaced by influencers and algorithms confirming existing biases.

Historical civilizations experienced similar cognitive fragmentation through different mechanisms. The Reformation shattered medieval Europe’s shared religious framework, producing centuries of confessional warfare. The print revolution enabling Protestantism also flooded Europe with pamphlets and broadsides spreading rumor and conspiracy alongside legitimate news. The result was the Wars of Religion, killing a third of Germany’s population. Only violence exhaustion and the secular state’s rise restored minimal shared coexistence frameworks.

Our fragmentation occurs in an environment of far greater informational abundance and far weaker mediating institutions. The printing press produced thousands of texts annually; the internet produces billions daily. Filtering mechanisms—editors, peer reviewers, librarians—that once separated signal from noise have been bypassed by platforms prioritizing engagement over accuracy. Falsehoods spread faster than truth. Confirmation bias is industrially exploited. The expertise concept itself is delegitimized as elitism.

By 2035, this fragmentation will have produced distinct epistemic communities inhabiting incompatible ontologies. The medical establishment will treat diseases significant populations believe are hoaxes. Climate adaptation projects will be sabotaged by those denying climate change existence. Historical narratives will diverge so radically that national identities fragment. The “truth” concept itself will become politicized, with different communities accepting different evidence standards and different authorities.

Cognitive fragmentation undermines complex societies’ collective learning capacity. When civilizations face challenges, they must diagnose them accurately and develop solutions collectively. The Maya couldn’t respond to drought because their religious framework attributed it to supernatural causes amenable to ritual rather than climatic patterns amenable to adaptation. Rome couldn’t address its fiscal crisis because senatorial elites couldn’t accept their tax exemptions as unsustainable. Today, we face ecological, energetic, and institutional challenges requiring accurate diagnosis and coordinated response. Cognitive fragmentation ensures neither is possible.

Fragmentation is reinforced by the attention economy’s economic incentives. Media outlets serving distinct epistemic communities can monetize audiences through subscription and advertising. They have no incentive to correcting errors confirming audience worldviews. The result is a positive feedback loop: fragmentation creates market niches, which incentivizes further fragmentation. The center cannot hold because there’s no economic value in centrism, nuance, or the hard work of establishing facts contradicting tribal loyalties.

Cognitive fragmentation is perhaps the most difficult stage to reverse because it undermines recognition capacity. Populations experiencing fragmentation don’t perceive it as a problem; they perceive their own epistemic community as truth’s sole possessor, all others as deluded or malevolent. Fragmentation becomes self-sealing, resistant to evidence challenging it. By the time fragmentation consequences—failed institutions, abandoned infrastructure, collapsed supply chains—become undeniable, rebuilding shared frameworks’ capacity has been lost. Civilization descends into the war of all against all, not from resource scarcity alone, but from shared fictions enabling cooperation dissolving.

Stage Six: The Future Is Already Spoken For

Debt is a claim on the future. When societies borrow, they promise to repay with tomorrow’s productivity, tomorrow’s resources, tomorrow’s energy. When debt accumulates faster than productive capacity to service it, the future gets discounted, then mortgaged, then consumed. The indebtedness trap is the stage where past claims exceed present possibilities, creating contraction that can’t be escaped without default, inflation, or both.

The figures are difficult to wrap your mind around. Global debt has reached $350 trillion, more than triple 2008 financial crisis levels. According to the IMF, global public debt could hit 100% of global GDP by decade’s end if current trends continue—a ratio unseen since World War II’s aftermath. In 2024 alone, combined government and corporate bond borrowing amounted to $25 trillion, nearly triple 2007’s figure. Total worldwide sovereign and corporate bond debt now exceeds $100 trillion, almost equivalent to global GDP.

This debt isn’t financing productive investment generating returns sufficient to service it. It’s financing consumption, speculation, and unsustainable complexity maintenance. Corporate debt has funded stock buybacks inflating equity prices without creating productive capacity. Government debt has financed wealthy tax cuts and military expenditures not enhancing economic productivity. Household debt—student loans, mortgages, credit cards—has substituted for wage growth, allowing consumption to continue even as real incomes stagnate.

Historical precedents clarify where this leads. The French monarchy in the eighteenth century accumulated debt financing wars and court extravagance, reaching a point where debt service consumed 50% of state revenue. Reform—taxation requiring nobility to pay—was politically impossible, leading instead to default and revolution. The Weimar Republic faced war reparations in gold marks that couldn’t be met through productive capacity, leading to hyperinflation destroying middle-class savings and delegitimizing democratic institutions. The Roman Empire debased currency to pay for military campaigns, reducing denarius silver content until money was worthless, trade contracted, and the tax base evaporated.

Our indebtedness trap differs in scale and complexity. Debt is global, denominated in multiple currencies, entangled in derivatives markets amplifying risk. A major sovereign or corporate borrower default could trigger cascading failures across financial systems. The 2008 crisis demonstrated this fragility; the next crisis will occur in a context of far higher debt levels and far less policy capacity to respond. Central banks have already reduced interest rates near zero and engaged in quantitative easing inflating asset prices without restoring productive investment. Crisis-addressing tools have been exhausted.

By 2030, the indebtedness trap will have produced a generation of young people who can’t afford housing, can’t start families, can’t imagine futures different from precarious presents. The social contract—work hard, save, invest in the future—will have been revealed as fiction. Demographic consequences will compound economic: falling birth rates, aging populations, shrinking workforces supporting ever-larger debt and entitlement claims. The intergenerational contract will break down as young people recognize their parents and grandparents consumed the future supposed to be theirs.

The indebtedness trap creates perverse incentives accelerating other collapse stages. To service debt, governments must cut maintenance and adaptation spending, allowing infrastructure decay and ecological crises to worsen. To generate returns, corporations must extract resources at unsustainable rates, deepening ecological rupture. To maintain consumption, households must accept ever-more precarious employment, eroding social fabric enabling collective action. Debt becomes a vise tightening with every turn, constraining options until only catastrophic release remains possible.

The terminal indebtedness trap phase is financial repression—state power use to channel resources to creditors at citizens’ and savers’ expense. This was how the United Kingdom reduced its debt-to-GDP ratio after World War II: inflation eroding debt’s real value combined with regulations preventing capital flight. Such repression is politically possible only in strong state capacity and social cohesion conditions that no longer obtain. In fragmented societies, financial repression will be experienced as theft, triggering capital flight, black markets, and monetary system collapse.

The indebtedness trap ends when past claims are repudiated—through default, hyperinflation, or debt jubilee. Each outcome destroys wealth on a massive scale, wiping out savings, pensions, and institutional credibility enabling credit market function. The emerging civilization is poorer, simpler, and more localized than the entering one. Debt-financed complexity can’t be maintained without it. Descent is irreversible.

Stage Seven: Reaching Too Far

All complex civilizations are imperial projects, extracting resources from peripheries to support power and culture centers. The Roman Empire taxed Egypt and Syria to feed Rome and maintain the Rhine frontier. The British Empire extracted cotton and opium from India and China to fuel industrialization. The American-led global order has extracted oil, labor, and markets from the Global South to maintain developed world consumption. Imperial overstretch occurs when periphery maintenance costs exceed extracted resources, when extraction mechanisms break down, and when peripheries begin withdrawing consent.

Overstretch signs are visible in 2025. The United States maintains approximately 750 military bases in 80 countries, spending more on its military than the next ten nations combined. Yet it has failed to achieve strategic objectives in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, or Ukraine. Global military presence maintenance costs—some $850 billion annually for the Department of Defense alone, plus trillions in veterans’ benefits and war debt interest—consume resources that can’t be devoted to domestic infrastructure or ecological adaptation. The military becomes a machine that must be fed, requiring perpetual conflict to justify existence, even as conflicts degrade imperial project legitimacy and capacity.

Supply chains that once seemed efficiency sources have revealed fragility. The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated that just-in-time manufacturing systems spanning continents couldn’t withstand disruptions. The semiconductor shortage halted automobile production. A single ship blocking the Suez Canal disrupted global trade for weeks. These were minor perturbations compared to what climate change, energy descent, and institutional fracture will produce. The imperial periphery—Asian manufacturing centers, African and South American resource extraction zones, warming ocean shipping lanes—will become increasingly unreliable as local elites prioritize survival over imperial supply chain maintenance.

Historical empires experienced similar overstretch. The sixteenth-century Spanish Empire extracted silver from Potosí to finance European wars, but defending shipping lanes against privateers and maintaining Netherlands armies consumed extracted wealth. The twentieth-century British Empire faced simultaneous challenges from rising powers (Germany, the United States, Japan), colonial nationalist movements, and two world wars’ costs. The 1947 India withdrawal marked the beginning of the end; within two decades, the empire had dissolved.

Our imperial overstretch occurs in a multipolar world where alternative power centers have emerged. China has become the world’s manufacturing workshop, largest commodity consumer, and technological competitor. Russia maintains vast energy and mineral resources despite sanctions. Regional powers from India to Brazil to Indonesia assert interests against American hegemony. The dollar’s global reserve currency role faces challenges from bilateral trade agreements denominated in yuan, rubles, and other currencies. The financial infrastructure enabling American dominance—SWIFT, the IMF, the World Bank—faces competition from alternative institutions.

By 2035, imperial overstretch will have produced global order fragmentation into competing blocs. The United States will lack resources to maintain global military presence and will withdraw to hemispheric defense. Regional powers will assert control over immediate neighborhoods, producing resource and territory conflicts that the declining hegemon cannot manage. Late twentieth and early twenty-first century globalization will reverse into regionalization and localization. Global supply chain efficiencies will be sacrificed for shorter, more controllable network security.

Periphery withdrawal will have catastrophic consequences for dependent centers. The developed world has offshored manufacturing, allowing deindustrialization that eliminated working-class prosperity. It has become dependent on rare earth elements, critical minerals, and manufactured goods it cannot produce domestically. When the periphery withdraws—when China restricts gallium and germanium exports, when African nations nationalize mines, when shipping lanes become unsafe—centers will face shortages that can’t be resolved by market mechanisms alone. Imperial economy complexity will prove unsustainable without the imperial reach that maintained it.

Imperial overstretch is reinforced by energy descent. The military is among human activities’ most energy-intensive; the Pentagon is the world’s largest institutional petroleum consumer. As energy becomes scarce and expensive, force projection costs rise while returns—distant resource control—decline. The empire must contract because it can no longer afford its reach. Contraction is experienced as defeat, humiliation, and loss, fueling political radicalization accelerating institutional fracture.

The Roman Empire contracted gradually over centuries, losing Britain, then Gaul, then North Africa, until only the eastern half remained. Contraction accompanied civil wars, barbarian invasions, and urban life’s transformation into feudalism. Our contraction will be faster, compressed by modern communication velocity and global system interdependence. Imperial overstretch will resolve not in gentle decline but in sudden ruptures—financial crises, supply chain collapses, military withdrawals under fire—leaving populations unprepared for following simplification.

Stage Eight: When It All Comes Down

The final stage isn’t a single event but a cascade, the point where previous stages’ failures interact and amplify, producing discontinuities that can’t be managed or reversed. The terminal phase is characterized by involuntary simplification: complexity loss that abundant energy, functioning institutions, and shared belief had maintained. Cities shrink or are abandoned. Technologies are lost. Populations migrate or die. The emerging civilization is simpler, poorer, and more localized than the fallen one.

The terminal phase has already begun in regions experiencing earlier cascade versions. Syria collapsed under combined drought, authoritarianism, and geopolitical manipulation pressures; its population fell by half, its cities were destroyed, and its cultural heritage was looted or demolished. Yemen faces famine and cholera in war and water depletion contexts. Haiti, Zimbabwe, Venezuela—each demonstrates how quickly complex societies unravel when multiple systems fail simultaneously. These aren’t aberrations. They’re previews.

The cascade operates through mechanisms systems theorists call “tipping points” and “synchronous failures.” When one system fails, it places stress on others already near their own thresholds. The 2008 financial crisis nearly triggered global depression; only massive government intervention prevented cascade. Such intervention won’t be possible in the future, when governments face their own debt crises and legitimacy deficits. The next financial shock will cascade through energy markets, supply chains, and political systems before any response is possible.

Climate change provides the master cascade mechanism. As the 2025 Global Tipping Points Report documented, we’ve already passed irreversible thresholds. The Amazon approaches savannification releasing centuries of stored carbon. The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation weakens toward shutdown that will plunge Europe into Little Ice Age-like conditions while the tropics experience unprecedented heat. Coral reef extinction will eliminate nurseries sustaining fisheries feeding hundreds of millions. Each tipping point triggers others; the cascade accelerates.

By 2050, the terminal phase will have transformed the planet’s human geography. Coastal cities—Miami, Shanghai, Bangkok, Alexandria—will face sea level rise measured in feet, rendering infrastructure unusable and property values worthless. Agricultural regions—the American Midwest, the North China Plain, the Indo-Gangetic Plain—will experience heat and drought making outdoor labor impossible for weeks each summer, collapsing yields and triggering migrations. Earth’s carrying capacity, already exceeded by industrial civilization, will contract by billions. The question becomes not how to manage abundance but how to allocate survival.

Migrations will trigger political crises completing collapse. The Syrian civil war, producing one million refugees, nearly destroyed European Union cohesion. Future migrations—hundreds of millions from equatorial regions, tens of millions from coastal zones—will overwhelm border controls and trigger authoritarian responses that institutional fracture has already prepared. Democracies will become dictatorships or dissolve into warlordism. Nations will fragment along ethnic and religious lines. Global era cosmopolitanism will evaporate, replaced by tribalism.

Technologies defining modernity will be lost not because they’re forgotten but because they can’t be maintained. Nuclear power plants require constant cooling and grid connectivity; when these fail, meltdowns poison regions for millennia. Chemical plants store toxins requiring sophisticated management; abandonment releases them into air and water. The internet requires massive energy inputs and global coordination; fragmentation will reduce it to local network patchworks. Complex system building and maintenance knowledge will survive in books, but resources, supply chains, and institutional frameworks necessary to implement that knowledge will be gone.

Population will decline, not merely through mortality but through conditions enabling childbearing disappearance. Young people facing precarity, climate chaos, and institutional collapse won’t form families. The demographic transition that reduced fertility in wealthy nations will become demographic collapse reducing population everywhere. Societies’ aging will place impossible burdens on shrinking working-age populations, accelerating maintenance and care abandonment.

The terminal phase ends not with a bang but with a whimper—gradual life simplification until the civilization that was is no longer recognizable. The Maya didn’t disappear; they abandoned their cities and dispersed into village agriculture persisting to this day. Rome didn’t vanish; it transformed into the Byzantine Empire and then into feudal Europe. Our collapse will similarly produce successor societies—simpler, more localized, less complex—that will carry our knowledge and culture fragments into whatever comes next.

What distinguishes our terminal phase is scale. Previous collapses were regional: the Maya, the Romans, the Mesopotamians. Our civilization is global. The cascade won’t leave untouched refuges into which survivors can retreat. Climate disruption is planetary. The financial system is global. Supply chains encircle Earth. Simplification will be universal, affecting all regions and all classes, though not equally. The wealthy in their fortified enclaves will last longer, but they too depend on systems that will fail.

I’ve walked through eight stages, and if you’ve read this far, you might be wondering what to do with this information. I’m not sure I have satisfying answers. Understanding where you are in a process doesn’t necessarily mean you can change the process. The Maya priests studying drought patterns in their astronomical records couldn’t make it rain. Roman reformers understanding the empire’s fiscal unsustainability couldn’t convince the senatorial class to tax itself.

But there’s a difference between knowing and not knowing. Between walking into something blindly and walking into it with your eyes open. Between being surprised by the cascade and recognizing its early signs. The eight stages outlined above aren’t predictions in the sense of telling you exactly what will happen and when. They’re pattern recognition, an attempt to see clearly what’s already unfolding around us.

History suggests that collapse, however painful, isn’t the end. It’s a transformation—often a brutal one, often involving tremendous suffering, but still a transformation rather than an annihilation. People survive. They adapt. They build new ways of living from the ruins of the old. The question isn’t whether human societies will continue; they will. The question is what forms those societies will take, and how much of what we value can be carried through the transition, and who gets to make those decisions.

We’re further along in this process than most people recognize. Some of these stages are well advanced. Others are just beginning. None are irreversible in principle, though reversing them becomes exponentially more difficult as they progress and reinforce each other. The window for intentional navigation—rather than reactive crisis management—narrowed considerably in recent decades and continues to narrow.

What remains is the work of building resilience in whatever forms are available to us: local, immediate, practical. Learning skills that don’t depend on complex supply chains. Creating relationships of mutual aid that don’t depend on institutional mediation. Paying attention to what’s actually happening rather than what we’re told is happening. These aren’t solutions to civilizational collapse. They’re ways of living through it with some measure of dignity and some capacity for adaptation.

The ruins will remain, monuments to our moment, awaiting future archaeologists who will wonder, as we wonder about the Maya and the Romans, why those who built such grandeur couldn’t see the end approaching. The answer, of course, is that we could see it. We just couldn’t agree on what we were seeing, or what to do about it, or who should bear the costs of doing something. That’s how civilizations end. Not with a revelation, but with a failure to coordinate. Not with a bang, but with a thousand small decisions that seemed reasonable at the time, accumulating into something no one chose and no one can stop.

I don’t know what comes next. Nobody does. But I know that paying attention is better than looking away, that understanding is better than denial, and that however this unfolds, there will be people living through it, adapting, building something new from whatever remains. That’s what humans do. That’s what we’ve always done. The question is whether we can do it with some measure of wisdom, some memory of what we learned, some care for who and what comes after us.

The stages are mapped. The trajectory is visible. What we do with that knowledge—that remains undetermined, and will be determined not by prediction but by action, day by day, choice by choice, as the world we’ve known transforms into something else entirely.
